McAfee
« on: August 20, 2006, 06:54:40 PM »
:help:  My anti-virus (or whatever) software that came on my computer expired, so I've got McAfee now....My pooter is moving sooooo slow now. In addition to that, since I moved a few weeks ago, there is no DSL here (no cable either), so I'm on dial-up (temporarily, I hope)  What can I do to make my computer go faster?

Aside from dumping McAfee, not much. I've seen browser accelerators and the like that are supposed to make your dialup go faster, but all these really do is prefetch pages while you're idle. McAfee, however, is a memory hog, even worse than Norton as far as I'm concerned. There are several lightweight antivirus utilities that are much easier on your system resources, some of them even free. On my own machine I run the freeware version of Avast! Antivirus.

If you have the time (this could be tedious for you to type in)... do a CTRL-ALT-DELETE to bring up Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab and let me know what's on that list and how much memory each process is consuming.

I want to see what might be hiding in the background (r.e., spyware and the like) and using your system resources.

There's a few of those I wasn't familiar with, but they look OK:

siteadv - siteadv.exe - Process Information

  Process File:    siteadv.exe
  Process Name:    SiteAdvisor Browser Plugin
Run a Free System Scan for siteadv.exe Related Errors

Description:    siteadv.exe is a process belonging to Site Advisor which protects your computer against Internet-bound threats from websites by classifying each with a safety rating. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.
For More Info About siteadv.exe - Get WinTasks 5 Pro Now!

Recommendation:    Should not be disabled, required for essential applications to work properly.
To get control over your running programs we suggest WinTasks

     Step 1:
Select Your Operating System:

  Part of:    SiteAdvisor

  Security Risk (0-5):    n/a ( Secure Now )
Spyware:    No ( Free Scan )
Adware    No ( Free Scan )
Virus:    No ( Virus Scan )
Trojan:    No ( Trojan Scan )
Memory Usage:    N/A ( Free Up Memory )
  System Process:    No
  Application:    Yes
  Background Process:    No
  Uses Network:    No
  Uses Internet:    Yes

I can't find anything about ReditSvc.exe. Terminate the process and see what happens.

Your system actually looks pretty good, but as I figured, McAfee and its attendant programs are using up your resources.

That's more McAfee stuff running, so just leave it be.

Bring up Task Manager again and click on the Performance tab. Can you tell me what your CPU and Page File usage is? Also look under Physical Memory and give me Total, Available and Cache.

Look at the bottom and see what percentage your CPU usage is.

Those aren't bad numbers, either. I'm guessing your machine's a few years old. It looks like the biggest problem is McAfee. It's a memory hog and can bring a system down to a crawl. I had it on mine briefly and dumped it in a hurry.

The next time you're ready to shut down for the evening, try disabling or unloading McAfee and browse a few known safe sites like Yahoo or CNN or whatever and see if your system is any perkier with McAfeee not running.
