like to think, "what if?" Because if I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times: we don't know everything.
Ultimately, on a cosmic level of course, we humans are probably about as dumb as we can be. We limit what we know because it's easier to assume that someone else has done all the work and already knows everything. Why think outside the box when past scholars and scientists have worked so hard to form the rigid boundaries for our convenient reality?
How can an intelligent thinker admire the work of Einstein yet scoff at the notion that unknown beings might be visiting us from other dimensions or periods of spacetime, when his work clearly opens the door to such possibilities.
I'm a skeptic with the best of them but we must assume that there are things happening in our world that we have yet to understand. It may sound crazy, but there really could be facinating and downright scary monsters swimming in the deepest chasms of our world's oceans. There could be aliens piloting interdimensional craft from civilizations far more advanced than our own; time travelers popping through wormholes and cruising over our cities and towns at supersonic speeds.
There could be ghosts stepping into our reality; spirits of the dead walking beside us just behind the thin veil of an invisible realm. There could be unknown creatures living in the wilderness; giant man-beasts that have remained hidden for centuries. Why not? There is more evidence to indicate that these things may be real than there is to disprove them.
Strangeness is that which we don't know, and there is certainly something strange at hand beyond our current comprehension. There is just too much world around us to assume that we know it all; too much vast universe surrounding our relatively small planet adrift in a sea of weightless space. Too much. And we still have much to learn.
The scariest thought to those who wish to settle for easy living is the possibility that things are not as they seem. It's easier, and less frightening to take what is handed to us and just move along.
It's a brave soul that ventures into these unknown spaces, open to the mocking eyes of the public. The payoff may be worth enduring the jeers and jokes. Add "t" and "s" to fanatic and you end up with fantastic, relatively speaking of course. The point is that there is more than meets the eye, all it takes is an open mind to start looking. What's your bet?
What if?
