Deep Freeze on the Way

Seen the forecast? A high of 18 on Wednesday? We'll all be taking out second mortgages to pay the heating bills.

What's strange is I heard the birds singing like it was spring for the first time today. And the willows are budding.

We have a heat pump with the new house...I miss my gas heat.  We had a gas stove in the old house...that was so warm...used propane.  Heck of a lot cheaper and warmer.  I have been an icicle all winter...and it hasn't even been that cold.  Furnace man said it would take me a year to get used to the heat pump.  I don't know if I'll survive.  Imagine new to heat pump and hemaglobin of 5.  Not a good combination.  end result was heart attack with first electric bill.  :roflmao:

Heating and cooling costs are just two more reasons I want to sell this house and downsize. Plus I want the heck out of Bluefield and away from their taxes.

No, just Bluefield, provided I can unload this barn on someone with deeper pockets than mine.  No plans to leave the area. Looking for something outside the city, probably near Princeton.

Yeh, gotta love it. :) I'm ready for spring. Hey, at least, I won't get held up by schoolbusses this morning.

-2 degrees when I got up this morning.  Right now it's 0.  High temperature here will probably hover around 10 degrees according to the scanner.  Propane stoves and electric heating are keeping  me toasty.  I downsized into a smaller house which I love.  I had a heat pump in my big house for 14 years.  I never got used to the thing. I was always cold in the winter and the bills were outrageous.  Isn't one of the power companies in southern WV raising rates by 25%?

There's only one power co. in Southern WV, namely Appalachian Power.  *yk*

I haven't heard about a rate increase, but it wouldn't surprise me. Bluefield Gas got another one, why not Apco?

The GF and I are downsizing this year, so if anyone wants to purchase a 2-story brick built in 1915, located in one of Bluefield's historic areas, give me a call.  *nat*

A doublewide located in Gardner Estates sounds really good at this point.

I'm sold on the buck stoves  - I have one upstairs and one downstairs.  Best heating system I've ever had.  I have a heat pump but only backup with it if the stove was to go out sometime during the night.  The new buck stoves can hold a fire for days.  Rarely ever have to restart it because they  keep the hot coals for days and days.  Nothing like wood heat.  I have mine set up as fireplace inserts and absolutely love them.  I had propane downstairs up until last year and took it out and replaced it with the buck stove and have been very happy with the change.

Virginia to get higher rates...

Virginians riled over APCO increases

By Bill Archer
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

LEBANON, Va. — When he returned home to Lebanon on the weekend of Jan. 20-21, state Senator Phillip P. Puckett, D-Russell had 15 voice mail messages waiting for him. With all the important issues the General Assembly addresses every year, Puckett was not surprised by the number of calls he had to return. However, he was surprised by the nature of the calls.

“A dozen of them were from people with concerns about their electric bills,” Puckett said. “People have told me that the bill they received in January is the biggest bill they have received in their lives.”

Puckett said that Appalachian Power’s rate increase is under review by the Virginia State Corporation Commission, and he said that APCO has said they will work with customers who have difficulty paying their bills.

You have a male deer for a stove. How much heat does it make and how do you get the heat out into the house? :roflmao:

I have had an Earth Stove since 1980. My house is 3 levels and the stove is on the lowest level. There is absolutely nothing like it. Heats the whole house with no auxiliary fans, convection only. Great stove.

You do have to pay a bit more attention to keeping the chimney clean with a re-burner stove like that, however.
