A Woman In Berlin - Anonymous
Eight weeks in the conquered city at the end of WW II.
sounds interesting let, us know.
"A Woman In Berlin" was written by a 34 yr. old German journalist. She took notes of everything that happened to her as well as her neighbors and friends, from April to mid June 1945. They only knew that the Americans had reached the Elbe and stopped. "Our fate is rolling in from the east. My sole concern as I write these lines is my stomach. All thinking and feeling, all wishes and hopes begin with food."
Berlin hospitals estimated 95,000 to 135,000 rapes for that city.
Some of the Russian soldiers would provide food for their trouble. If he was an officer it also provided some protection from other soldiers. The most important thing was to survive.
This diary was first published in 1954 in Switzerland and disappered into obscurity. It was reissued in 2001. ( After the authors death at her request )
