Is this fair?
« on: January 07, 2010, 06:42:54 PM »
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia's largest hospital plans to fire any employees who haven't been vaccinated against seasonal flu.

Charleston Area Medical Center spokesman Dale Witte says workers have until Friday to get the shots.

The policy was announced last summer. Hospital officials say mandatory vaccines for workers protect both patients and employees.

The hospital allows exceptions for employees with medical reasons for avoiding the shot, such as allergies.

Witte wouldn't say how many employees risk being fired. He did say it amounts to "a handful" of the hospital's roughly 6,000 staffers.

CAMC is one of a small number of hospitals in the U.S. to require flu vaccines, although required immunizations against other illnesses is common.

Why is it fair?  Do employers have the right to dictate things like this?  If so then when do they start making Birth Control mandatory or Sterilization or thousands of other shots etc...?

It's no different than me having to pass random drug screens because I have a CDL. It's the mantle of the democrat party, the safety of others trumps our personal rights.  :shrugg:

It is fair because they are hospital employees.  They could put patients at risk by having the flu and coming to work before they are aware they have it,  or maybe be aware and come anyway.  All precautions should be taken by hospital management to protect their patients from being infected by their own staff.

Hmmmm... :sneeky:  Do the patients that come in not infect the others anyway?  What about housekeeping staff?  What about kitchen?  Is  it just nurses?   Shouldn't it be mandatory for all Doctors?  What about restaurants?  Schools? department stores? etc.... :sneeky:

You are right. Funny you would mention dems in that statement. The majority owner of the company I work for requires drug screenin' Heck he a full blown pub.

Is everything political? :faint:

What drove that home for me was when I was involved in the fight to repeal the mandatory helmet law in WV. Our most outspoken opposition in Charleston was from the democrats. They felt they needed to protect us from ourselves. Us poor dumb hillbillys weren't smart enough to know when to wear a helmet. The pubs, on the other hand, supported us almost 100%. Since we know where the majority lies in WV., it's not hard to figure out why the law was never repealed. I will give Manchin credit, he said if the repeal got to his desk he would sign it. Of course he knew the odds of that happening were slim to none.

Politics because they have to be those d*mn REPUBLICANS and those  stoopid DEMOCRATS  as others say have divided this nation.  There is a party line and noone wants to cross it.  You have to be one or the other ....you cannot be in between.  Sad thing is that is exactlly where I often find myself.  Until we learn to work together instead of fight, the rules will flow swiftly and destructively.  What happened to one nation under God?

Most states have helmet laws and there is good reason for it. I personally don't care if folks wear helmets or not. But in this case the dems were lookin' out for you. If it was not for helmet laws poor folks like me could not afford the motorcycle insurance premiums. Just maybe the pubs were linked with the insurance agencies and were hopin' to make a few $

What makes you think you couldn't afford the premiums? Do you carry fully coverage with medical payments on your bike? I know lots of folks who ride in Ohio and South Carolina, and their insurance isn't any higher than WV.

I did forget to mention a democrat who gave us a lot of support in the fight. It was A James Manchin. He was a politician through and through, but he was a good guy.
