Things That Make Me Smile
« on: June 24, 2009, 09:51:28 AM »
I noticed about a week ago that pink flowers were beginning to appear at the top of the crape myrtle tree in my back yard...and this morning at least 5 beautiful white blossoms on the Rose of Sharon small tree just outside my back door. There are two more nearer the fence which don't get as much sun that haven't bloomed yet - they will have pale lavender/ pink blossoms. I may soon have a ring of flowers all around my small patio if I don't take out some of the new Rose of Sharon that have rooted. I don't know if they'll have blooms this year or not. Outside my back fence I have fig bushes like the ones at Mt. Vernon that my son planted, and beyond that, up a little hill, are trees, which in the summer hide the townhouses on the next block.

What makes me smile this time of year?  My brother's agricultural graffiti.

When he comes up here to spray the corn in the corn fields, he sometimes sprays a message to me in the grass of our yard.  Last year it was his name.  LOL  So funny.

Things that make me smile: Trees, beautiful trees. My parents' little house was just about the only level spot on the road up the 'holler,' and there were trees everywhere you looked. There was a steep hill with trees behind the the house, and I used to cross over the little creek at the bottom and climb to the top and lie on my back on a big rock and look at the sky through the treetops. Never thought about being afraid.

It makes me smile when there's  a hot wind in the middle of the night.  You know what I mean?  Only in the middle of the summer can you be out under the stars and not get chilled.  When I go outside at 630 in the morning, and the breeze is still hot like the day before.  I love that.

The fog on the water early in the morning as daylight starts to break at the farm pond.

My dog all excited playing in the fresh cut hay.  (mole hunting at it's best)

My garden without weeds,  doesn't happen often but occasionally.

Watching my hubby with his treasured rock collection.   :roflmao:

Big Red, you like a hot wind in the middle of the night. I'm just the opposite - I like it cool. Years ago when I lived in WV I used to wrap up on really cold nights when the sky was dark and clear, and look up at the stars. Sometimes a good friend would drive me to Stovall Ridge, between Camp Creek and Beckley. On a clear cold moonless night the view was breathtaking.

I guess if you like a cold wind, Libby, then you're happy most of the year.  Here it is the 3rd of July and we were cold outside tonight at our little cookout and campfire!  Most nights are cold, thats why I like the hot.  Its special.  To each his own.   :39:

Actually, I like the distinct change of seasons that I remember from living in WV. Here in the D.C. metro area we tend to be hot and cold and not much in between.

My "here" is Bland Co.  You know where that is?  Straight over East River Mtn. from 4 seasons country.   :39:  I can hear the trains from Bluefield at my house.  But Suzi's been here........its the middle of nowhere!

Beautiful country,  but I wouldn't wander too far into those corn fields.   :39: :roflmao:

We are having the same cool weather here in Bluefield as well.  It has been so cool in the mornings it felt like fall and some days haven't warmed up till late afternoon.  A couple days last week I thought a light jacket would have felt good,  course I was in shorts wondering if I slept through summer and woke up in fall.   :shrugg:

Big Red: LOL. Bland County, VA! Sometimes when I drive to Bluefield, I follow I-81 south to the 77 north exit at Wytheville, and go through Bland County. The mountains are so beautiful as you approach and leave the first tunnel. It's like traveling back in time for me....

Yeah, that seems to have become our identity, the "land between the tunnels."
