why would someone NOT want health insurance?

I've known lots of people over the years who don't want health insurance. There is one similarity in all of the one's I've known, they've all been single. They also all had the same outlook considering insurance, which is why should I pay a premium every month when I don't go to the doctor? If something major happens, I'll pay a trifling amount every month toward the bill and it will be much less than an insurance premium, and who cares if it's ever paid off or not. Regardless of what the naysayers here state, there's a lot of folks who live that way, by their own choice.

Over the past ten years of my place of employment in NC I have seen more than a few turn down insurance.

Best regards,
Duke (go figger) Jupiter

The only times I've ever seen someone turn down insurance is one, the spouse is already
providing insurance and two, they couldn't afford to pay their portion.

I dont know that's exactly not wanting it Gray. Not wanting to pay for it, maybe.  :roflmao:

Jumping up to Tonys comment. Thats an age when people are just starting out Tony...and health insurance is damned expensive. The health insurance premiums I have now would have been a quarter of my bring home pay when I first got out of school, and I imagine I was better off than many.

But that doesnt alter the fact that those people are counted in the uninsured catagory. That number that the left throws around is bogus when you check into who doesnt have insurance. I dont think illegal aliens belong in the count either.

If they can't afford the insurance then they belong in the category.

That's true, but we don't know where the line is between people who can't afford insurance and the people who would rather spend their money on other things.

what do you think is an affordable percentage of a persons income to spend on health insurance?

Try buyin' rejection control meds. I have a high deductible insurance plan and the first 1500.00 comes out off my pocket per person. Then it goes to 80/20. I do have a tax exempt medical savings account to help. One thing about my policy there is a max of $4000.00 out of pocket per year. I reach that amount every year. That adds up to about $333.00 per month plus the cost of my policy. I spend approx. $450-$500.00 per month for health insurance and I am thankful I have it.

Best regards,
Duke (things can be worse) Jupiter

That's hard to put a finger on. Off the top of my head I'll say 10% would be a big premium for most folks.

I had good health insurance...but after I opened my store my husband convinced me to quit my job at Penneys and just run my store..so I did..sdo I had Cobra for a year...my husband did not like the figures to keep my insurance..so he told me to drop it and we would get self employeed health insurance..I did..we got a policy and it did not cover any of my doctors here,,i would have had to drive away from here to get a doctor on the provider list..so I cancelled that policy since it was doing me no good..within a month I got ill and was hospitalized with no insurance...I started my quest to find a new company...they all wanted an arm and a leg...we finally found another one and took it..then my doctors didn't recognize or take them...so cancelled that...back to the search..still looking for someone that will cover a diabetic with heart problems,COPD,high blood pressure, acid reflux disease etc..etc...when I find someone the cost for me is astronomical and my husband refuses to pay their prices...some wanted over 1,000+ a month..and they always raise the premiums on you. So I am 56 and in not so good health with no health insurance...I hope they do come up with something for people like me..I need insurance badly.

I’ve recommended before a book by Sally Pipes, “ The Top Ten Myths of American Health Care”. It discusses many of the issues mentioned in this thread.

That sounds about right to me too Gray...but if you've ever had to shop rates, you know most people couldnt get anywhere near that cap.

I just recently changed coverage. It's gonna hit me for about 8% of my gross.

do you pay it all your self? What kinda coverage does that get you? (High deductibles?)

At the first company I ever worked at, the employer paid 100 percent of the employees premium ( about $300 a month for $1000 deductibles and $20 docs visit copays). I dont remember the exact figures, but if you added your kids andspouse, I want to say it was almost $500 out of pocket to cover your whole family. (less of course if you were just covering the spouse or one kid). Anyhoo...this one guy that worked with us had a wife and two kids at home he was covering, and that $500-some he was paying was quite a chunk of change for a guy who was only making in the low 30s.

$500 deductible per person plus the $20 copay. The 8% is my cost.

If you get government out of healthcare you could. Look at the mandates added by the feds and states over the years. If you could shop for insurance across state lines for the coverage that suits you, prices would go down. We had cheap coverage until Teddy and the government got involved.
