Gryph, why not cut down all the forests for Cellulosic biofuels, and then plant corn for ethanol? It could be headed that way if theres a buck to be made.

ethanol, IMHO, is nothing but a band aid, its not a long term solution.

Make your voice heard Gryph, email your congressman and Senators and tell them it's folly. Not enough people talk to their representatives.

I've been reading this thread, and a theory occurs to me.
It is common knowledge that some 100 to 150 years ago, there was much more cleared land in the US and elsewhere, because much more land was needed to provide food. Now, if that's correct, and lets assume that it is, there would be much less land to grow trees, and thus less oxygen. At about the same time, liberalism and socialism were conceived and flourished for much of that time. It's my theory that the decrease in oxygen affected the thinking of the world population. Now, since our farming techniques have improved, more trees are growing, and socialism is in decline. Unfortunately, permanent damage occurred to the genes and progeny of a certain part of the population, now known as democrats.
Please don't send me a lot of information from educated fools trying to disprove my theory, which I believe is as important as the theory of natural selection.

an interesting theory of course
But the initial premise ignores that 150 years ago we didnt have as many buildings, roads, airports, cities, towns, etc. taking up land. Id be very surprised to find that more land was cleared by humans 150 years ago than is now.

I was trying to make a joke, G. It might have been cosmic rays that affected the liberals. But I do recall that at one time something like 70% of the land in Vermont was pasture or farmland. It's much less than that now. Anyway, nature has it figured out, and corrects for variation, I think it's called homeostasis. Not having looked it up, I doubt that the portion of oxygen at sea level has varied appreciably over modern history. Certainly if this isn't correct, BoD will correct me.

Nope. It's a waste of time. And I've never been to Vermont.

The oxygen content of air is the same all over Earth. Vermont is the most socialist part of the US, but the air is the same, plus or minus a few pollutants. However, I see your point about not wanting to loose another discussion.

Po, your theory about oxygen is indeed fascinating, but I think mine makes more sense: Every now and then Gaia shrugs. libby

I seriously doubt there are more in the world. I could be wrong but I do think the quality of timber has somewhat diminished.
